visual artist and artist of social practice
Mak Hubjer (1993) is a visual and performative artist born and raised in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and currently based in Zagreb, Croatia. His work has been exhibited widely, including solo shows at Waldinger Gallery in Osijek, Shira Gallery in Zagreb, and Salon Galić in Split, as well as collective exhibitions such as the 57th Zagreb Salon (Meštrović Pavilion) and SouthWest–NorthEast at Uniarts Kuva/Tila in Helsinki. His works are part of notable collections, including Eur’Art Collection and the Collection of Duplex100m2.
Through his practice, Mak explores the intersections of memory, identity, and public space within the socio-political context of Bosnia and the broader Balkan region. His work critically examines how monuments, symbols, and urban environments shape collective narratives while also exposing their fragility. Rooted in the lived experience of Sarajevo’s post-conflict realities, his installations and performances challenge traditional histories while creating space for new interpretations.
Mak’s projects often combine humor, poetics, and conceptual rigor to address themes of displacement, transition, and collective memory. Works like Čista Savjest (Clean Conscience) and his series of empty flagpole installations provoke reflection on nationalism, identity, and the legacy of conflict. His practice is deeply informed by the complexities of Balkan art while contributing to broader global conversations about art’s role in shaping public discourse.
Now based in Zagreb, Mak continues to develop his artistic practice while fostering connections across the region. He is the founder and director of Brodac Gallery in Sarajevo, an independent art space dedicated to collaboration among artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and beyond. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo and the Art Academy in Split, he is also a member of the Croatian Association of Visual Artists-Split.
